Reflection

Those words of Jesus are yet another reminder of our human frailty, for what did the leper do? He went out and told everybody—just as Jesus expected he would. Still, he was healed and, because of him, many came to seek Jesus.

Gospel music is filled with hymns of healing. I try to exhaust the repertoire every year at our parish Mass of healing, as every person who wishes it is anointed. The music of healing in all of its genres is a doorway to Christ. We, my colleagues, are the gatekeepers of that musical treasure. May we always allow it to accompany the holy oil that transforms so many lives in Jesus' name.

Prayer

Jesus our healer, we give you thanks for your wonderful gift.

Continue to touch us in Word and Sacrament,

so that we may be made whole to go out

and proclaim your justice to all the world.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Simon's mother-in-law lay sick with a fever.

They immediately told [Jesus] about her.

He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up.

Then the fever left her and she waited on them."

Mark 1:30–32

Reflection

The inauguration of Jesus' ministry is identified in Mark's Gospel: preaching and especially healing. What is most striking from the account for this Sunday—the healing of Simon's mother-in-law—is her immediate response: to wait on them. For me, this immediate response connects us to the new translation of Eucharistic Prayer II in which we now pray, "giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you." We might just want to step back and ask ourselves as pastoral musicians, presiders, preachers—anyone in any liturgical ministry—just how authentic this prayer is for us. In other words, what in our ministry are we doing begrudgingly? Or what in our ministry truly reflects our prayerful presence before the Lord?

Reflection

In today's society, it is sometimes difficult to see light in the midst of the world's darkness. Power, money, and prestige— rather than holiness, goodness, and truth—often seem to have authority over the whole world. However, Jesus reminds us that he is the true authority and that his word is the last word, that the grace of God has power over sin and death, and that the love of Christ will prevail in the end.

It is Jesus' power over evil that brings healing and hope to our world and to our lives. As Christians, we are called to trust in that power and to live in the light of faith, knowing deep in our bones that all will be well in Christ Jesus.

Prayer

God of all goodness, strengthen our faith

that we may believe in the power of Christ in our world and in our lives.

May we see the Light that shines in the darkness

and trust in the Light that never fails.

Reflection

It's not too hard to imagine a modern-day Jonah walking through the streets of Los Angeles, perhaps wearing a sandwich board and using a megaphone, announcing imminent destruction of the city and the coming of the Lord. But if we focus instead on the Gospel's imagery, it's harder to imagine someone today with the powerful magnetism of Jesus as he attracts his first followers from among the common fishermen of Galilee. Imagine immediately leaving your family and livelihood to follow a complete stranger. Were they irresponsible, or did they sense something in him compared to which everything else faded in importance? Perhaps they recognized the Source of Life itself that would sustain them and their families for ever.

Prayer

God of Life,

open our hearts to receive your Word dwelling among us.

Sustain us as we strive to follow you in our daily lives.

Teach us patience with our own slowness to see clearly your plan for us.

We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Reflection

We have just completed our annual commemoration of the Word becoming flesh and dwelling among us, ending this week in the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord.

Just as water can be gentle, refreshing, and life-giving as well as destructive, terrifying, and death-dealing, so too can words be effective in their power to heal, soothe, and encourage as well as to denigrate, dismiss, and destroy.

In some way we share the great privilege and responsibility that Samuel had to use words to build up the Reign of God and the Body of Christ, choosing never to use them to tear down others for our own benefit.

Prayer

Lord, your breath brought life into this world at creation,

and your breath sustains and re-creates life.

May the breath that forms our words and songs always be life-giving and true.

May these words lead others to you

and to the joy that comes from acknowledging your goodness

and to the desire that we share in the promise of eternal life.

Reflection

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Mary, the holy mother of God. We rejoice that this title also claims Mary as mother of the Church: She is our mother. In the secular world we also celebrate today as New Year's Day, a time when many people may consider making new year's resolutions.

May we follow the beautiful model of Mary, pondering God's blessings and care, and resolve for this year to answer "yes" to the Lord's plan for us, just as Mary did.

Prayer

Father of wonder, new beginnings, and love,

help us to imitate Mary's acceptance of your holy will.

Aid us in pondering challenges and new directions in our ministries

as we search for your guidance in our work

and resolve always to do your will.

Reflection

David desires to build a house fitting for the Lord.

God reminds David that the Holy One cares personally for and builds security and a home for Israel.

Mary is in awe to be highly favored and carry her God as her son.

On this Sunday before Christmas we desire to prepare fitting liturgies for Christmas that will help bring people home.

We have prepared our people for the new Roman Missal translation and music and hope that its implementation bears spiritual fruit.

We approach the winter solstice longing for darkness to yield to dawn.

We long for justice, peace, and mercy to overcome violence, hatred, and greed.

Reflection

If there is anything we Americans seem obsessed with, it's how we dress ourselves. I am sometimes fascinated by the lengths to which we will go just to stay "in style." (For example, while I was in an airport this fall, it soon became obvious to me that someone out there had decided that knee-high boots are now all the rage!)

But the best things we can "wear" are interior things, and, thankfully, they never get worn out, and they can never go out of style. They are our dispositions, our attitudes, our stances. They are the voices we direct toward those who need to hear of hope and love. And they are the garments that befit us most, especially as we approach the celebration of the Incarnation.

Prayer

Lord, we are caught up in the midst of transitions affecting our prayer.

Help us be positive, and help us clothe ourselves with a sense of prayerful joy.

Help us guide our assemblies with an attitude of exuberance in the midst of change.

Guard us against those things that diminish the radiance of our heart's diadem:

the voices of despair and cynicism.

Keep the voice of our heart singing "Gaudete!"

Reflection

Saint John the Baptist didn't preach in a synagogue or in a nice auditorium. He lived and ministered in the desert—a place that is harsh and devoid of life.

Our world is still a desert. Billions struggle with—and millions die from—starvation, savage violence, lack of clean water, and lack of appropriate medical care. For those of us who are fortunate to have adequate food and safety, the desert has more subtle perils—hate, greed, jealousy, lies, and pride (to name just a few). Like John the Baptist, church musicians are heralds of good news, not only through what we sing but also in the way we live. We prepare the Lord's way by overcoming hate with love, greed with generosity, and pride with humility. We preach, live, show, and sing God's unfailing love and mercy.

Prayer

Come, Lord Jesus.

May our hearts, lives, and voices herald your coming

and straighten the way made crooked by sin and evil,

so that we may prepare a road that leads to the eternal Jerusalem.

Reflection

The day has finally arrived! We have been preparing for the implementation of the revised Roman Missal for months—even for years, for some of us. And now the time has come to put the book into practice—to see the fruit of our careful and extensive preparations. We have had the opportunity to prepare for this day. We have had fair warning of the date, and we are well prepared, with our new music settings, newly published worship aids, and the many catechetical moments and resources we have provided for our people.

Can we expect to have such advance notice before the final day of the Lord? On the one hand, no: God will come in God's own time, and we will not have the benefit of advance texts or resource materials from various publishers. But, on the other hand, the Scriptures tell us that the day will indeed come, and our "resource materials" are with us every day in the Scriptures, in the prayers we pray, and in the songs we sing.

Prayer

God of all ages and all times,

you are steadfast and faithful in your love for us.

May we find joy in singing our new songs,

and may the songs we sing help us look toward your coming with joyful anticipation.

Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King

November 20, 2011

"Thus says the Lord God: I myself will look after and tend my sheep."

Ezekiel 34:11

Reflection

The two images of Christ as both king and shepherd in today's readings present us not only with great comfort but also with serious challenge—especially for music preparation. God is great mercy and compassion, who rescues us from every place that is "cloudy and dark," but God is also king, who judges between the righteous and the accursed.

The question that comes to mind is this: How do I as a pastoral musician make that image of Christ as both shepherd and king real? Do I focus on one image to the diminishment of the other? If the music only focuses on the loving shepherd and not the great king who will judge, then it may be doing people a disservice. The tension between these images of God is not easy to deal with, but it is real. The combination of them is found in the fact that it is the compassionate shepherd who pulls us up from sin and then calls us to live anew, to live as the ones whom the king calls "blessed." May we find the courage to follow that call of Christ on this solemnity.

Prayer

God who is both king and shepherd,

lead us back to your loving embrace,

for we often stray.

May our ministry of worship and music help those to whom we minister

feel both your compassion and your call to new life.

Reflection

We musicians are the most fortunate of people to have been given one of God's own gifts— the gift (or talent) of music. It is a share in God's joy! So, how have you increased that joy lately—both God's joy and your own? That servant who buried his talent didn't fare so well when the master returned. Have you learned that Vaughan Williams Rhosymedre you've admired for so long? Those flute parts for the new Mass settings? Taken voice lessons to provide better support for your higher range? Worked out those tricky guitar chords? How are you increasing your gift? It's all a share in God's joy.

Prayer

Dear God, you are the great gift-giver.

Thank you for talents you have given,

offering me a share in your joy!

Reflection

God offers us wisdom, but God does not force her upon us. She is found and recognized only by those who are alert to the things of God and who actively seek her out. Love of God and of neighbor is the lamp that must be burning bright. The oil of our baptismal anointing is the source and encouragement that will let the light of Christ burn brightly. As we prepare to receive the new translation of the Roman Missal, will our lamps be burning brightly, or will we experience an "oil crisis"?

Prayer

God of the wise and the foolish,

allow us to share our baptismal oil with all

so that at dawn and at the midnight hour

our lamps will be burning brightly

with the warmth of Christ's redeeming embrace.

Holy Wisdom, illumine our minds and spirits.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Reflection

When the Church comes to bless musicians, instruments, and music books (Book of Blessings, Chapters 38 and 39), she cites Colossians 3:16 because she knows that it is the work of the Word of God to help our hearts sing.

We musicians know that music also helps the Word get down into our hearts. There the Word builds his home, his instrument.

Today's Gospel makes us aware that we can sometimes get in the Word's way, drawing attention to our skills, meeting our own needs. No matter our degrees, diplomas, certificates, and credentials, we are ever the learners, always the led. The one master must increase. Our egos weaned, we are free to nurse others.

Prayer

O Jesus singing in heaven now,

make music in me.

Sing in me, direct me, play through me. Amen.

"You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

Matthew 22:37–39

Reflection

There are 613 laws in the Torah; 248 "thou shalts" and 365 "thou shalt nots." The Pharisee in today's Gospel poses a question asked of any teacher of the Law: How do you prioritize these for your followers? Christ responds appropriately with the Great Commandment but then, unexpectedly, with the second one, claiming that all the rest of the Torah (and the prophets as well) depends on these.

How can we, as pastoral leaders and musicians, apply this dual commandment to love in our lives? How do we prioritize 399 rubrics in the GIRM or 259 paragraphs in Sing to the Lord, let alone all of the other rules and regulations that are part of our ministry and work?

Are we willing to step back and ask if we are following laws and rubrics simply because they are there or because of our desire to show God—and, in turn, our neighbor— love through our best efforts in liturgy and in life? Do we carry out the commandment to love in our interactions with fellow ministers, the parish family, and the wider community? Do we work continually to deepen our relationship with God, which in turn reveals God in our neighbors? As God loves us, let us return that love and share it with each of our brothers and sisters.

O Lord, my strength, may my life be a perfect song of love to you and all of your creation.

Reflection

What a gift—to be called by name, to be known and recognized just because you are and not just for what you do! To belong, to feel affirmed! Yet from our mother's womb, God had already named us and chosen us. No matter what our state in life, whether single, married, or ordained; healthy or ill; working or searching for work; adding non-perishables to our parish food pantry or in line to receive a bag of groceries, in our Father's eyes, we are all equal. As to what to do with who we are, we all share in the priesthood, kingship, and prophetic mission of the Son through our common baptism.

So, let us look the same way at all the people we meet each week and remember that God have called and chosen them, too. Each one deserves the same honor and respect from us that we believe we receive from God and that we hope to receive from them.

Prayer

Yes, Lord,

through our daily suffering, dying, and rising again,

you are our strength.

Help us to see you in all those we meet in our ministry;

let us see others as you see them in every moment of life;

and help us to see ourselves as people you have chosen for your own.

Amen.

"The king said to him, 'My friend, how is it

that you came in here without a wedding garment?'"

Matthew 22:12

Reflection

For Christians there is only one proper wedding garment: our baptismal garment. This attire is necessary if we are going to respond to the Lord's invitation and to have a place at the banquet. Pastoral musicians, "like other baptized members of the assembly, . . . need to hear the Gospel, experience conversion, profess faith in Christ, and so proclaim the praise of God" (STL, 49).

If our baptismal garments are colored with compassion, hemmed with humbleness, stitched with sincere love, and trimmed with tolerance, our music ministry will reflect God's love and we will be grace-filled. Only then can we experience the transforming power of the Eucharistic feast.

Our challenge is to come to the feast dressed not only as musicians, but as "pastoral"' musicians. We are continually called to examine our attire for stains of arrogance and anger, prejudice, perfectionism, pride, and pettiness. How we respond to the Lord's invitation measures the quality of our faith commitment.

Prayer

God of abundance,

Reflection

At the NPM Convention in Louisville , I met music leaders who were still very angry about the implementation of a new Roman Missal. I, too, had been of the same mind when the announcement about this change was first made. Since then, I have had much time to reflect on the matter, and now I look eagerly to the changes to come. I can feel this way because I have come to understand that the Holy Spirit is at work in everything that occurs in the Church. With the Holy Spirit at the core of this event, I feel assured that use of the new Roman Missal will bring about a renewal of faith, a deeper understanding of what and how we celebrate, and a greater participation in that celebration . . . but only if that is what we all hope to accomplish at every liturgy. If we work to become one in mind and heart—one in love and purpose—then our unity in leadership, in cooperation with the Holy Spirit, should bring about this renewal of faith.

Prayer

Blessed Jesus, may we humble ourselves, as you did. May we empty ourselves and be filled with the Holy Spirit so that we may be able to lead others to worship you more fully, more lovingly. May our response to your call to ministry always be "yes," and may we always be faithful in our performance of that ministry. Amen.

"Wrath and anger are hateful things, yet the sinner hugs them tight."

Sirach 27:30

Reflection

If we have learned anything over the past ten years since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, it is this: We can no longer hug closely the very things that lead to our demise—wrath, anger, fear. They have no place in the life of one who needs and seeks forgiveness. All of these things are bred from living for one's self, from hanging onto one's interests and concerns above the real needs of others. If we hug such interests and concerns too tightly, they become hateful things.

The life of the Christian, rather, is expressed in the open arms of the One who claims nothing as his own—in the open arms of Christ on the cross.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, send upon us your Spirit of forgiveness and love

that we may open our arms to a world

where difference and diversity are signs

of the love expressed by Christ

in his open arms on the cross. Amen.
